An urban farm in Sobrance. Oyster mushrooms and hydroponically grown vegetables, right in town, all year round. A hi-tech, AI-driven farm with no unnecessary waste.

01 · Project

What we’re preparing

A small urban farm is taking shape next to Café Dobrá Vila in Sobrance. It will have three parts that fit together.

Oyster mushrooms growing on substrate bags placed on lit metal shelves.

Container farm

A container with two zones:

  • Mushrooms: oyster mushroom, king oyster mushroom and shiitake in a controlled climate.
  • Hydroponic zone: lettuces, leafy greens, herbs and microgreens grown without soil in recirculating NFT (nutrient film technique) and DWC (roots submerged in an aerated solution) systems. The nutrient solution will circulate in a closed loop; we will continuously measure its conductivity (EC), pH and temperature and dose nutrients automatically.

Cellar farm

An indoor farm with additional NFT hydroponic systems and LED lighting with a spectrum tailored to herbs and microgreens.

Kitchen

We want to cook dishes in the café from our own mushrooms and vegetables, and later make honest products such as frozen mushroom pierogi or dried mushrooms.

02 · Why

Why we’re doing this

Local, not imported

Most mushrooms and many vegetables sold in Slovakia are imported. We want to show that fresh, local food can be produced even in a small town.

All year round, in any weather

Growing in a controlled environment doesn’t depend on drought, frost or weather, and yields harvests all year round.

Less water, no farmland

Closed-loop hydroponics uses far less water than growing in soil, and needs neither farmland nor herbicide sprays.

No unnecessary waste

We don’t want to throw anything away: coffee grounds from the café will help grow mushrooms, spent substrate will become compost, and less attractive mushrooms will be processed.

03 · Technology

A hi-tech, AI-driven farm

The project is backed by a team with more than 30 years of experience integrating hardware and software: from security and CCTV systems through energy and photovoltaic management to IoT sensor networks. We are bringing this experience to growing food.

We are designing the farm as a single connected, intelligent system:

  • Sensors everywhere: air temperature and humidity, CO2, lighting; in the hydroponics, conductivity (EC), pH, temperature and level of the nutrient solution; cameras to monitor growth.
  • Automation: climate, ventilation, humidification, lighting and nutrient dosing will run on their own according to set recipes for each crop.
  • AI-driven control: models will evaluate data from sensors and cameras, learn from every cycle, adjust growing conditions, forecast yields and flag deviations early. Final decisions and oversight always rest with a human.
  • One interface: everything on one dashboard, accessible remotely, with alerts to your phone.
  • Open data: we will publish part of the data on this website so that schools and other growers can learn from our pilot too.

04 · For schools

For schools and the community

Most schools in Sobrance are just a few minutes' walk from the site of the future farm. We are preparing field trips, workshops and hands-on lessons:

  • how mushrooms grow,
  • how hydroponics works and what the nutrient solution gives a plant,
  • what the data tells us.

We also want to involve local communities and show that you can grow food even without a big field.

    For restaurants

Once the farm is running, we want to offer fresh specialty mushrooms, herbs and leafy greens on the day of harvest, without a long trip from a wholesaler. If you're interested in future deliveries, get in touch.

      Where we are now

The project is in the preparation phase. Our plans and analyses are complete, we have visited farms and organisations in China, and we are looking for funding. The farm hasn't been built yet; we will share every step here.
